What Is an OTP? How SMS Verification Works

An OTP, or one-time password, is a short code that is valid for a single verification step. Services use it to confirm that a person can access the phone number, email address or authenticator device connected to an account.

How an OTP works

After you request a code, the platform creates a temporary value and sends it through a chosen channel such as SMS, email or an authenticator app. When you enter the code before it expires, the platform compares it with the value it created and either completes or rejects the verification.

Why platforms ask for phone verification

Phone verification can reduce automated sign-ups, provide an account recovery option and add a second signal when a user signs in from a new device. It does not guarantee that an account will be approved or remain open; each platform applies its own security and eligibility rules.

SMS, email and authenticator apps are different channels

A platform may change the channel during the same sign-in flow. A code sent to your email inbox cannot appear in an SMS order screen, and an authenticator-app code is generated on your device rather than delivered as a message. Read the platform prompt carefully before waiting for a code.

Keep OTPs private

An OTP can grant access to an account or complete a sensitive action. Do not forward it, publish it in a screenshot or paste it into a support request. If you receive a code you did not request, change the password of the related account and review its security settings.

When a code does not arrive

Check that the number and country code were entered correctly, wait for the platform's stated delivery window and avoid repeatedly requesting new codes. Repeated requests can trigger rate limits or platform security checks. If the platform offers another channel, such as email or an already signed-in device, follow the method it shows.

Practical security checklist

  • Use an authenticator app for accounts that support it.
  • Keep your primary email account strongly protected.
  • Do not share codes or recovery links.
  • Only enter a code on the official site or app you opened yourself.
  • Use verification services only for lawful purposes and in line with the platform's rules.
